Write 2 Rise Youth Writers

Written By Zaria Knight

There are thousands of people who have been in power, yet who are the main people that you
see? Men with money or men with power. We know there are women who are in power, and yet
where is their recognition? Where are they in the media? Where are videos of their awards, red
carpet walks, or inaugurations? It isn’t fair that women have to try twice as hard just to get half
of the recognition that men get! We deserve the recognition, the applause, the congratulatory
parties for everything that we have been through! If you don’t believe me, here are examples of 3
powerful women:

Sojourner Truth

● An African-American abolitionist, women’s rights activist, and author
● She helped recruit African American men for the Union Army during the Civil
War.
● Most historically known for her speech with the famous refrain, “Ain’t I A
Woman?”
● “I know and do what is right better than many big men who read.”

Malala Yousavzai

● A Pakistani activist
● In 2014, she became the youngest Nobel Prize laureate up to that time
● She was committed to advocating for girls’ education and her fearless fight against
the Taliban’s oppressive regime in Pakistan.
● “I raise up my voice – not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can
be heard.”

Shirley Chisholm

● Former United States Representative
● The first African American woman in Congress (1968) and the first woman and
African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States from
one of the two major political parties
● She supported the Equal Rights Amendment and legalized abortions throughout
her congressional career
● “We must reject not only the stereotypes that others hold of us, but also the
stereotypes that we hold of ourselves.”

These women and so many more are known for the power, commitment, and dedication that they
showed in their fights for betterment! While these are some that are very well-known, there are
many other hidden figures in history that need to be given the limelight they deserve! If these
women went against the masses to achieve something noteworthy in our history, then who’s to
say that you won’t be the next?!
