Namina Forna did what needed to be done in #TheGildedOnes!!! In the fictional land of Otera a young girl Deka learns she isn’t like her peers and is sent off to fight with other girl warriors in preparation for a war with creatures called Deathshrieks. 
 
This book is amazing and touches on how patriarchy is harmful to us ALL in the most amazing way. It reminds us to always question the narratives told to us and that you can always make it through hardships with true friends. 
 
This book is grappling, fun, heartbreaking, and adventurous at the same time. Plus it does a great job of incorporating aspects of Forna’s Sierra Leonean culture in the land’s fictional culture. The Land of Otera’s patriarchy is familiar to us all.
